Ma lashes out at `unrepentant' Chen

TALKING TOUGH The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) chairman said he had seen no evidence of remorse or self-reflection from the `corrupt' president

By Mo Yan-chih  /  STAFF REPORTER

Regarding his support for Kuang Li-chen (鄺麗貞), wife of former Taitung County commissioner Wu Chun-li (吳俊立), in the county commissioner's by-election after Wu was indicted for corruption, Ma said the two had no connection, just as the president's daughter Chen Hsin-yu (陳幸妤) had nothing to do with her husband Chao Chien-ming's (趙建銘) case.

In response to Ma's speech, former premier Frank Hsieh (謝長廷), who is also the DPP's candidate in the year-end Taipei mayoral election, condemned Ma as "saying one thing and doing another."

"If Ma thinks the economy is important, and admits that political instability has influenced the stock market's performance, then why has he led street protests recently?" Hsieh was quoted as saying in a CNA story.

Cabinet Spokesman Cheng Wen-tsang (鄭文燦) -- noting that Ma had said before that the KMT would not back a recall unless evidence showed Chen was directly involved in the scandals -- said that Ma's decision to make accusations against the president without evidence only politicized the judicial case and damaged Taiwan's democratic development.
