Lin met with 17 leaders at APEC forum

DIPLOMATIC BUSINESS Taiwan's representative said the meetings included both formal discussions and informal talks during breaks in the summit sessions

One major contribution Taiwan made was to upgrade the APEC Digital Opportunity Center (ADOC) -- a measure to eliminate the digital divide by setting up Internet facilities in Vietnam, Chile, Peru, the Philippines, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea -- to ADOC Plus, to help remote areas of these nations sell products via the Internet.

The new project is also called "one village, one product."

Lin anticipates Taiwan playing a bigger role in APEC in order to expand its visibility on the world stage, as the forum is one of the few official international organizations of which it is a member.

Meanwhile, Teco Group chairman Theodore Huang (黃茂雄) told reporters last night that he spoke to China's president about the possibility of signing a free-trade pact. According to Huang, Hu said talks on a free-trade agreement between the two APEC economies were possible, but the Chinese president didn't elaborate further.
