Chinese Web sites are being heavily used to breach unclassified networks in the US Defense Department and other US agencies, the Washington Post said yesterday, quoting US officials who were unsure if the Chinese government was involved.
"It's not just the Defense Department but a wide variety of networks that have been hit," including the departments of state, energy and homeland security as well as contractors, an official said.
While classified systems have not been compromised, the officials said, there was concern that information pulled together from various sources could yield useful intelligence to an adversary.
"The scope of this thing is surprisingly big" and stretches back as far as two or three years, one official said.
Another official said the FBI has opened an investigation into the incidents, which have been codenamed Titan Rain. The Washington Post said the FBI declined to comment.
