`Good premier,' purged reformer Zhao Ziyang dies

MUTED REACTION The Chinese authorities have virtually silenced local media outlets, as a former aide called for Zhao to be given due respect in death

During the 1989 protests, Zhao called for compromise and expressed sympathy for some of the demonstrators' demands.

But his adversaries, led by then premier Li Peng (李鵬), overruled him, called in the military to quash the protests and used the turmoil to attack Zhao and his supporters.
