With about NT$10.5 billion emergency fund at its disposal, the Cabinet yesterday unveiled several relief packages to help people affected by Tropical Storm Mindulle cope with their losses.

Small- and medium-size enterprises affected will be entitled to low-interest loans of up to NT$30 million per business. Farmers and fishermen affected will be eligible to apply for low-interest loans out of a pot of NT$5 billion reserved for the purpose, which should be issued within a week.

The families of those who died in the storm will get an extra NT$100,000 in compensation per victim, on top of the NT$200,000 mandated by law.

Despite widescale public criticism of the Ministry of Educations's decision to hold Joint College Entrance Examination as scheduled last Thursday under the threat of Mindulle, the ministry yesterday said that the Basic Competency Tests, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, will be held as planned.

The two-day compulsory examinations for junior high school students are central to the selection process for senior high school entry.
