Chen saddened by death of `Taiwan's best friend'

President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) was saddened after learning of the death of former US president Ronald Reagan on Saturday and asked the country's representative to Washington to convey his sympathy to Reagan's family, according to a presidential aide.

"President Chen said Reagan was Taiwan's best friend because of his support and friendship to Taiwan. His passing away is a loss for the United States and the world. Taiwan people will always remember his friendship and assistance to Taiwan," a statement issued by the Presidential Office said yesterday.

The aide quoted Chen as lauding Reagan's achievements during his two four-year terms as president of the US and said that his presidency was a legacy that was admired by Americans.

For Taiwan, Chen was quoted as saying, Reagan will be remembered as a good friend whose support helped the nation survive many crises, and his death is an immeasurable loss both to the country and to the world.

Meanwhile, an official from the foreign ministry said Taipei's representative to Washington, Chen Chien-jen (程建人), has already conveyed President Chen's condolences to Reagan's family.
