The nation's export orders last month rose to their highest level since October last year, increasing 27.81 percent from the same month last year to US$17.24 billion, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said yesterday.
The ministry attributed the rise -- the highest monthly gain since September 2000 from US$15.04 billion in February -- to strong demand overseas for semiconductors and other electronics goods.
By sector, orders for electronics products reported the biggest increase last month, rising 49.13 percent from the same month last year to NT$3.59 billion, the ministry said, citing a substantial recovery in the semiconductor industry. Next were orders for information and communication products, which grew 22.53 percent to US$3.28 billion, the ministry added.
For the first three months of the year, export orders amounted to US$46.21 billion, up 22.67 percent from a year earlier.
The ministry had previously predicted that export orders, an indicator for shipments in one to three months' time, might increase by double digits during the first half of the year.
Chang Yaw-tsong (±iÄ£©v), the head of the ministry's statistics department, yesterday maintained this optimism, saying that export orders would continue to achieve double-digit growth in this quarter.
