Kaohsiung Mayor Frank Hsieh (謝長廷) called on Ma to use his influence to convince opposition lawmakers to approve the referendum law, which has been bogged down in the legislature for over a year.
"It doesn't make sense to deprive the people of their guaranteed right of referendum simply because the legislature has delayed the legislation for the past 50 years," Hsieh said.
