Reward offered in Lafayette scandal

The Ministry of National Defense is offering a NT$100 million reward for information leading to the cracking of the Lafayette frigate purchase scandal, which remains unresolved after nearly a decade.
"The Lafayette scandal has done great harm to the military. It is still unresolved. We now offer a NT$100 million reward to help. We hope the case will be solved as soon as possible," ministry spokesman Major General Huang Sui-sheng (¶ÀÁJ¥Í) said at a press conference.
"Besides the reward, the ministry will suggest to the president that an amnesty be offered to any person who provides information if they are involved in the Lafayette scandal," Huang said.
Minister of National Defense Tang Yao-ming (´öÂ`©ú) announced several months ago in the legislature his plans to use money as an incentive for people who might hold vital information about the Lafayette scandal. The Executive Yuan has come up with regulations for the reward.
The scandal stems from alleged kickbacks related to the 1991 purchase of six Lafayette-class frigates from France. The murder of a navy captain two years later is also thought to be connected to the scandal.
