The central bank cut its benchmark interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point yesterday after the US Federal Reserve reduced its benchmark overnight rate by a similar amount, according to a government official who asked not to be identified.
The bank lowered its key rediscount rate, charged to commercial lenders for 10-day loans, to a record 1.375 percent from 1.625 percent.
The US Federal Reserve reduced its overnight lending rate by a quarter point to 1 percent, the lowest in 45 years. The cut, which was less than the half-point drop that some investors expected, sent US stocks lower on Wednesday.
Lower rates will reduce borrowing costs, making companies more inclined to take out loans.
This latest rate cut may prevent the NT dollar appreciating against its US counterpart after Wednesday's reduction by the Fed. That may help exports, which account for about half of Taiwan's GDP, at a time when the SARS epidemic and near-record unemployment are damping spending at home.
