Taiwan's supporters in Washington also are looking for greater international support for Taiwan's bid.
Coen Blaauw, executive director of the Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA), a Washington-based lobbyist for Taiwan, said Japan's Foreign Ministry last October promised him that Japan would speak on the WHA floor on behalf of Taiwan in Geneva if the US takes the lead.
It would be the first time Tokyo has actively spoken in support of Taiwan's bid, which FAPA would consider a major breakthrough.
Blaauw said he secured the commitment in Tokyo during a visit with Masao Yu, the head of the World Federation of Taiwanese Health Alliances, an international group working for Taiwan's WTO participation. He also noted that the EU's parliament last year passed a resolution supporting Taiwan in the WHO.
