For the fourth consecutive year since its launch in 1999, Taipei Times' exceptional page layout and design outshined its fellow English-language newspapers in the 24th Annual "Best of Newspaper Design" competition held by the Society for News Design.
The result of the latest competition -- for the year 2002 -- were announced Tuesday in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.
Taipei Times garnered four Awards of Excellence in the Feature Design category. This record number also makes it the biggest winner among all participating Asian English-language newspapers outside of Australia.
Equally impressive achievements were made by the Liberty Times, Taipei Times' sister newspaper which has the largest circulation among Chinese-language dailies in Taiwan, with a record number of nine awards, including one Silver medal, in the Feature category.
Taipei Times' staff designers won the awards for their design of "From Station to Station" (Dec. 7, 2002, page 16), "Quality Becomes Crystal Clear" (Oct. 6, page 17), "Horsing around for the New Year" (Feb. 12, page 9) and "Jingle bells ring for Jaing Zemin" (Dec. 24, page 9).
The competition was co-sponsored by the society and Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. More than 12,000 entries from 351 newspapers in 37 countries were received in all categories for the 2002 competition.
Taipei Times was one of the 36 of World's Best-Designed finalists in 1999, the World's Best-Designed newspaper in 2000, and the recipient of an Award of Excellence in 2001.
