Meanwhile Ma staged a mass campaign rally last night featuring several KMT heavyweights, including KMT party chairman Lien Chan (連戰).

Ma was also joined by his four sisters and his wife Chou Mei-ching (周美青) on stage at the rally, which was held at the Youth Park.

"We don't have the so-called president card but we have the residents' card," Lien told the rally. "And that's what counts."

"After all, it is Taipei residents who are casting their votes and not presidents nor former presidents," he added.

Speaking on behalf of the KMT, Lien told Ma's supporters not to become complacent despite polls showing that Ma is in the lead.

Ma appealed to the crowd to support his re-election bid by campaigning on his record in city government.
