Chen reportedly wants economic summit

President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) is planning to call a third strategy meeting of government and DPP leaders, this time to discuss ways of boosting the economy, a Chinese-language newspaper said yesterday.

Topics to be discussed include how to deal with the problems of increasing Taiwanese investment in China, direct cross-strait links, the pace of financial reform and how to reduce unemployment, the report said.

According to the report, the meeting is scheduled for next week, but the exact time and place remain to be decided. Many officials have already received top secret memos telling them to keep their agenda open for next week, it said.

Following the Tashee and Sanchih meetings, this is the third time Chen has called a strategy meeting. The report says that Chen is hoping that discussions will focus on economic, financial, industrial and unemployment issues to motivate ministries to speed up their efforts to boost the economy and improve Taiwan's competitiveness.

The National Security Council is planning the meeting, which will include the president and the vice president, as well as officials from the Presidential Office, the Cabinet, the National Security Council, the DPP, financial, economic and industrial circles, the Mainland Affairs Council, the Council for Labor Affairs and the Ministry of Justice. The organizers are also considering whether to invite experts from various fields.

Other Chinese-language media reports suggest that Chen's advisers are pressing him to consider devaluing the NT dollar.

Hsieh Chin-ho (謝金河), president of Win-Win Weekly (今周刊), reportedly recommended in a speech at the Presidential Office yesterday a devaluation to NT$40 to US$1 in an attempt to attract foreign currency to Taiwan.
