An opening ceremony for the "Taipei Eye" was held yesterday at the Taiwan Cement Building, Chungshan North Road, Taipei. Taipei Eye opens up a new arena for illustrating the beauty of local performing arts.

The "Taipei Eye" is the first theatre of its type in Taiwan, a theatre that aims to reflect the essence of traditional culture in Taiwan. It has regularly scheduled programs designed to entertain the target audience, the tourist.

During the past 300 years Taiwan has experienced many changes in the performing arts. In only one evening in the "Taipei Eye," you will have the rare chance to see different aspects of the local performing arts.

The programs bring to the audience the delicate beauty of Beijing opera, the lively and skillful manipulation of hand puppets, the aboriginal dance stamping to the beat of life, the rural atmosphere of the Hakka music and dance, and thrilling acrobatic acts.

With the title-sponsorship of the Council for Cultural Affairs and the ROC Tourism Bureau, the Koo Foundation spent two years of preparation for this venue to demonstrate the multi-cultural scenes of performing arts in Taiwan.

Each performance in the "Taipei Eye" is approximately 90 minutes.

The first season runs from late September to mid-January 2003.

Backstage guided tours are available to let the audience have a glimpse of the working space of the performers or take your own photo with your favorite Beijing opera actor in proper costume and make-up.
