PRC businessmen expelled after seeking investment

The government yesterday ordered a visiting Chinese business group to leave because it was soliciting investment in China.

It is believed that this is first time that Taiwan has ordered a Chinese delegation to leave the country since it opened its doors to cross-strait exchanges in 1980s.

The Bureau of Immigration confirmed that the eight-member delegation left the country on an afternoon flight yesterday.

Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Vice Chairman Chen Ming-tong (³¯©ú³q) said that the government's order for the delegation to leave the country yesterday was "a move in accordance with legal procedure."

"They apparently engaged in activities outside of the purpose of their visit," said Chen.

The delegation was invited by the Taiwan Plastics Industry Association for a seven-day trip of professional exchanges. It arrived in Taiwan on Monday.

The delegation from the Townships Enterprises Association of Jingin in China's eastern Jiangsu Province was led by the deputy secretary of Jingin's Municipal Communist Party Committee, Suen Fukang (®]ºÖ±d).

On Wednesday, Chinese-language media reported that the delegation had held an investment seminar in a Taipei hotel.

The Ministry of the Interior questioned staff at the hotel to confirm the reports, and on Thursday the Bureau of Immigration ordered the delegation to leave by yesterday.

"The activity was not listed on their itinerary approved by our government," Chen said.

Promotion investment opportunities in China is illegal in Taiwan.

According to Chen, members of the delegation will be banned from Taiwan for "a certain period of time" as punishment, without saying how long that might be.
