Record-high lottery makes 6 new multi-millionaires

By Sandy Huang  /  STAFF REPORTER

Six more multi-millionaires emerged in Taiwan last night after winning around NT$125 million each in the lottery.

Two of the winning tickets were sold in Taipei City, while the others were sold in Taipei County, Chiayi County, Kaohsiung County and Taoyuan County, according to TaipeiBank.

Yesterday's draw had attracted huge interest as the first prizes from the previous two draws had not been won and consequently were rolled over yesterday in accordance with lottery rules.

Fifty-one more lucky people won the second prize and will receive around NT$3 million each.

Last night's record-high NT$750 million first prize had millions of lotto buyers in Taiwan going lotto crazy once again, as they vied for the whopping first prize and hoped that he or she would be the lucky one to hit the jackpot in last night's draw.

Many lottery ticket dealers commented yesterday that last night's draw of the computerized lottery was by far the most popular ever, saying the enthusiasm of the frenetic lotto buyers displayed yesterday reminded them of the madness they had experienced when the first issue of the lottery was drawn.

In fact, the lotto mania was so hot that the Taipei Bank had issued an emergency announcement on Thursday urging the public to remain calm, adding that the chance of winning the first prize was one in 5.24 million.

Taoist shrines all over the country were full of worshippers consulting with deities for auspicious numbers.

A homeless man surnamed Liu from Wanhua district said that he had heard of yesterday's whopping first prize and had thus enrolled himself in a part time job just so he could have the money to buy lotto tickets.

"I bet my life on it," said Liu, who spent all his wageson the lotto yesterday.

Even people overseas had caught the lotto madness, as it was reported that orders for lotto tickets were placed from buyers from the US, Japan and Thailand.
