Taiwan and China should suspend their debate over unification and independence as well as the so-called "1992 consensus," Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) said yesterday.
In addition, Lu said, the government and Taiwan's people should rethink how to position the country in the era of globalization now that the country is joining the WTO.
Lu made the comments yesterday at a press conference for Taiwan Heart (
Lu said that with China and Taiwan becoming members of the WTO, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait will face great changes in their investment and service sectors. As a result, Taiwan should not waste time arguing over the independence-unification issue.
"Not only trade and economics, but also politics, should go on the track of globalization," Lu said.
Taiwan should be aware of its new position, "otherwise it will be gradually Sinicized," Lu said. "I hope all the people of Taiwan recognize the great significance represented by WTO entry."
Taiwan officially joins the world trade group today. To mark the occasion, Taiwan Heart plans to hold a WTO symposium in Taichung.
Chiu Chwei-liang (邱垂亮), convener of Taiwan Heart and visiting professor at Tamkang University, said former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) and Lu would attend today's activities and deliver speeches.
Taiwan Heart was established on Dec. 25 by a group of professionals who support the spirit of Taiwan and its sovereignty. The organization is focused on attracting elite from different areas to propose solutions to the major problems facing the nation.
