Security tight at summit

By Richard Dobson  /  STAFF REPORTER , IN QATAR

A man was gunned down after spraying a US airbase in Qatar with an assault rifle just two days before the beginning of the WTO ministerial meeting.

According to a report in the daily Gulf News, guards at the US base, which is around 40km from the capital Doha, shot and killed the Qatari man on Wednesday after he opened fire with an AK-47assault rifle.

The US Department of Defense clarified that no US personnel were injured in the brief exchange.

Qatari officials have assured trade representatives that security has been tightened ahead of the meeting, which will see ministers from the WTO's 142 members meet in the small Muslim nation of 600,000 people.
