High profile as it is, The Premier Voyage of the Century (
KMT Chairman Lien Chan (
Lien, at both an event held for the launch of a youth campaign team in Taipei and campaign rallies in Kaohsiung, said the entire book does not say a single word about the issues that most concerned Taiwan's people, namely its economy.
"Taiwan has slid to the bottom among the top 10 Asian nations, and the sliding trend is still continuing," Lien said.
"When writing a book, the president should at least address this problem, such as how we are going to cope with our unemployment rate, debts, investment and future," Lien said.
Instead, the book is devoted simply to attacking the president's rivals and bragging about his accomplishments, Lien said.
"He has made a mess of our foreign affairs and the military, and yet he is elated at what he has done," Lien said.
Meanwhile, PFP Chairman James Soong (宋楚瑜) urged President Chen to return immediately from his "campaign voyage" around the nation to "patch up the holes" in the country's economic network.
"Come, return quickly to mend the broken net. All the big fish have escaped from the big hole caused by Taiwan's recent absence from the APEC meeting," Soong said during a PFP campaign rally in Kaohsiung County.
Soong warned that Taiwan is being marginalized in the global economic network, as China is planning to cooperate with ASEAN members to establish a free trade zone, from which Taiwan will be excluded.
Soong suggested that Chen order the Executive Yuan and Ministry of Economic Affairs to meet and gauge the possible impact on Taiwan and to increase contacts with Southeast Asian nations.
In reference to Chen's transit stop in America early this year -- an achievement that Chen is very proud of, Soong said foreign affairs did not mean "eating beef steak in America" only.
