When asked to offer advice to the younger generation, Lee and Peng both stressed the importance of education, urging a revision of the textbooks for primary and high schools students.

Both argued for a greater emphasis on the history and geography of Taiwan and Taiwanese culture, so that younger generations would more easily identify themselves with Taiwan rather than China.

"Many of my teacher friends tell me that when they ask their students where the country's capital is and who they are, their students are confused.

"This shows that our nation faces an identity crisis," Peng said.

Echoing Peng's views, Lee said that Taiwan still has a long way to go to achieve a fully fledged democracy and a sound social system.

"I will continue to devote myself to those unfinished political reforms. I am responsible and willing to carry the `cross' for all," Lee said, adding that the public should put the blame on him alone and not the current government.
