McDonald's mum on `Mc' restaurant Starbucks challenge

Bored with burgers and fries?

McDonald's Taiwan recently opened a new snack outlet called "McSnack" in Taipei and plans to break ground on another new "Mc" restaurant next month.

"Next month we will launch a new [concept] store ... it's different from McSnack," said Ronnie Liao (廖幸安), public relations manager of McDonald's Taiwan.

But Liao declined to elaborate on the menu or the concept for the company's next venture.

McDonald's opened its new McSnack brand store -- unique to Taiwan -- late last month near the Chungshan Middle School Station of the Mucha MRT line.

Special to the McSnack menu are chicken and beef curry rice, bagels and English muffin sandwiches and waffles.

Liao denied the store was designed to compete with Starbucks, despite the fact that the menu offers nine different hot and cold coffee drinks.

But McDonald's No. 2 man says coffee is key.

"Drinking coffee has become more and more popular in Taiwan, and we would like to provide more snack options for coffee lovers here," said Wu Hsin-hao (吳昕顥), vice president of McDonald's Taiwan.

Liao said there were no immediate plans to expand the McSnack brand, which appears to serve as a testing ground for introducing new product lines.

Those products that meet with customer approval are then distributed throughout the country.

McSnack is a first for the global fast-food chain and proof that local management is looking to diversify beyond the saturated burger market.
