The report quoted Taiwan Ambassador to Macedonia Peter Cheng (鄭博久) as saying that the political situation in Macedonia is unclear. Cheng said he was told by Georgievski that he did not know how long he could hold back the mounting pressure from pro-Beijing forces within the government.

Cheng tried to meet with Mitreva after she made the remarks about Taiwan, but his request was denied, the report said.

To consolidate ties, Taiwan began building an industrial zone near Skopje last year and has offered US$300 million to help settle refugees displaced by war in Yugoslavia's Kosovo Province, many of whom spilled into neighboring Macedonia.

Ties were shaky from the start because former foreign minister Alexander Mimitrov launched ties with Taiwan while keeping former president Kiro Gligorov in the dark.
