President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) were two of the many high-ranking officials who paid a visit to ailing senior presidential adviser Li Kwoh-ting (李國鼎) at the National Taiwan University Hospital yesterday.
Li, 92, has been in a coma since he was rushed to the hospital Sunday night because of sub-arachnoid hemorrhage -- bleeding in the brain -- mainly as a result of heart problems.
One of the key architects of Taiwan's economic miracle, Li has held important government positions since 1953.
A former economics and finance minister, Li was a major economic policy-maker under late president Chiang Ching-kuo (蔣經國).
Having helped sculpt every important financial policy since 1949, Li has been dubbed the "father of Taiwan's technological development" as well as the "father of information and knowledge" and the "father of finance and the economy."
