"China fears having to face pressures from the US and Japan at the same time, and it worries about the strengthening of the US-Japan military alliance," said Yang Chih-heng (楊志恆), a political analyst at the Taiwan Research Institute.
"Now that China is busy negotiating with the US in the wake of the spy plane incident, it won't invest a lot in a fight with Japan. China's diplomatic standing as a powerful country can be compromised or collapse if the country confronts both [the US and Japan] at the same time," Yang added.
