He said he would continue to perform the ritual "as long as I can stand it."
"After I do this, I feel that my sins are washed away," he said.
Dante Ramos, 35, has been flagellating himself for eight years.
"Every time I do this, I go closer to God," Ramos said, hoping his sins for the whole year are absolved.
