But Taiwan's rather mild reaction to the report was perhaps tempered by past generosity shown to the nation by the global media, which has resisted the temptation to sweep Taiwan under the common carpet of "Asian cronyism."
The Economist itself celebrated Taiwan's economic resilience in November 1998 when it ran a survey on Taiwan, which, however, said Taiwan's success "owes more to the character of its people than to the wisdom of its government."
