Vice general manager commits suicide

STAFF WRITER

Li Ching-chiang (李清江), vice general manager of state-run Chunghwa Telecom, yesterday evening jumped to his death from the top of his company's recently constructed Hsinyi Road headquarters in Taipei.

About 9pm last night TVBS reported that Li had climbed onto the roof of the building that stands across from the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and leapt off, eventually crashing through the glass roof of the inner atrium.

While Li left no suicide note, TVBS reported that colleagues said he had been suffering from depression and had previously attempted to resign.

But his request to resign was denied and Li was instead instructed to take a one month leave of absence. Li was still on leave yesterday when he jumped.

Responding to questions about whether Li's suicide had anything to do with the illegal online sales of as-yet unlisted Chunghwa stock, Minister of Transportation and Communications (交通部) Yeh Chu-lan (葉菊蘭) said that the two events were unrelated.
