HK lawmakersto `debate' Taiwan independence

Hong Kong lawmakers are to debate a motion opposing independence for Taiwan, the Special Administrative Region's legislative council announced Tuesday.

The motion, to be tabled by Tsang Yok-sing of the pro-China Democratic alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong, will be debated today.

It follows criticism last month by the deputy director of the central government's liaison office here, Wang Fengchao, that local media should follow Beijing in its coverage of Taiwan.

Wang said Hong Kong's media should consider the principle of "national unity" when reporting on Taiwanese issues, and not treat views advocating the island's independence as normal news items.

Wang's remarks ignited a heated debate about press freedoms in the former British territory, with 837 local journalists signing a petition vowing not to become propaganda tools for Beijing.

China has proposed that Taiwan reunify under a looser version of the "one country, two systems" model it uses to rule Hong Kong and Macau.
