Hsu Chang-chin has served as a guard at the maximum-security Taichung Detention Center for about four years. Before that he worked in a military jail, detention center officials said.
The Coast Guard Administration, meanwhile, has been placed on high alert to prevent the escapees from smuggling themselves out of Taiwan.
