Indonesia has told its military to shoot any foreign soldier who crosses the border into Indonesian-controlled West Timor from the east, following a deadly clash on Sunday between Australian troops and anti-independence militia.
One Indonesian policeman was killed, Jakarta claimed.
Peacekeepers have denied allegations from Indonesian army officers that the clash took place on the West Timor side of the border.
The incident has angered lawmakers in Jakarta who claim Interfet forces have violated Indonesian sovereignty.
Australian prime minister John Howard immediately pushed for urgent talks with Jakarta to prevent further clashes.
But Amien Rais, the speaker in Indonesia's assembly, said yesterday the alleged intrusion threatened the country's security. "Our sovereignty cannot be broken by anyone. If peacekeepers enter Indonesian territory ... we should attack them," he said.
