Legacy Taipei, located in a former warehouse at Huashan 1914 Creative Park (華山1914), hosts top Taiwanese pop performers and international acts. Indie pop/acoustic duo DingDing and ShiShi (丁丁與西西) share the stage with indie pop group Queen Suitcase (皇后皮箱) tonight. There is a charity concert featuring A-list pop singers and musicians including Cyndi Wang (王心凌), Wu Bai (伍佰) and Wan Fang (萬芳) on Sunday.

Top indie act 1976 and noisy experimental rock group The Sign of Human (記號士) play tomorrow at The Wall (這牆), Taipei’s most prominent venue for indie rock artists.

Garage rockers Bowztiger (包子虎樂團) and punk outfit Forests (森林合唱樂團) hit the stage tonight at Underworld (地下社會), a small basement club in Taipei. Tomorrow’s audiences will see Swivelized Sounds making experimental psychedelic electronic drone noise along with Yearning Kru.

Tonight Indie rock club Revolver holds The Next Suck Thing, a parody of Legacy’s concert series The Next Big Thing, which showcases up-and-coming talent, featuring chiptune band Physical Chemical Brother (理化兄弟), Karma Collective and Dronetonics. Tomorrow’s lineup includes death metal outfit Coprocephalic and post-hardcore act Seeking the Ocean. Sunday sees a special event set up by Urban Nomad with Blood Orange, .22 and other guests playing.

Tonight’s show at Pipe Live Music, a main venue for indie music and parties, features pop musician Filipe King (杜俊瑋) and saxophone player and singer Ouyuchi (歐育齊). The second installment of Space Experiment was joined by a troop of experimental musicians and groups including Big Egg Hell Dog (巨蛋地獄狗), The Junk (帆人) and Goodbye Nao (再見奈央). It is visual rock outfit Naraku (奈落), melodic/metal act Minstrel (吟遊家) and MeHer (謎盒) on Sunday.

It is the release party of Hakka folk musician Hsieh Yu-wei’s (謝宇威) sixth album at Riverside Cafe (河岸留言) tonight. Pop singers Eica (江明娟) and Filipe King (杜俊瑋) take the stage tomorrow, followed by disco funk/acid jazz band Electric Mess Age (電子混亂世代) and Bon Zoul (伴手樂團) on Sunday. Tuesday’s lineup are indie rockers Maffine (瑪啡因) and Belabus (白蘿蔔). Hakka ensemble Liu A-chang and Da Bang Ni (劉阿昌&打幫你樂團) inject contemporary elements into Taiwanese music traditions on Wednesday. Thursday’s main act No. 3 Turnpike (台三線融合樂團) plays Okinawa music with Chinese Erhu as well as jazz drum and guitar.

Atayal female musician Lawa from Hsinchu performs tonight at Tiehua Music Village (鐵花村), an arts village composed of a music venue, design and crafts shops and a weekend arts fair in Taitung. Also on the bill is Hong Kong-based acoustic duo The Bollands. It is a night of rock ‘n’ roll by hard rock group Auntie Roxy (搖滾大嬸) and Thumper (重擊者) tomorrow.

The Wall (這牆) programs regular live rock shows at Kaohsiung’s Pier 2 Arts Center (高雄駁二藝術特區). Tonight’s show features garage rock favorite 88 Balaz (88顆芭樂籽) and Brit pop/grunge group Trash. Pop jazz artist Joanna Wang (王若琳) plays tomorrow. Sunday promises to be a night of metal sounds from Tainan-based heavy metal band Burning Island (火燒島), metalcore act Losing Art (漂浮者樂團) and Masquerader.

Event

Taipei Discussion and Learning meets every Sunday at Wisteria Tea House (紫藤廬) to hear lectures and discuss topics such as philosophy, science, anthropology, globalization and alternative medicine. All discussions and lectures are conducted in English. This weekend’s lecture is entitled: Ancient Aliens: Ancient Myth and Modern story telling, and features an interview with John Rush, who will discuss the popularity of the Ancient Alien Myth, where it comes from and how closely it is related to ancient myth — but myth none the less.
