Tonight’s main act at The Wall (這牆), Taipei’s most prominent venue for indie rock artists, is indie rockers Murky Crows (昏鴉). Also on the bill is noisy experimental rock group The Sign of Human (記號士) and Moonteg. A Mandarin rock band based in San Francisco, Dream Rush, performs tomorrow with The Chairman (董事長樂團) as a special guest. It is pop rockers Gsus (激射樂團), alternative rock band 3.D.B (參噸半樂團) and Candy Wine (糖果酒) on Sunday. Thursday’s roster is instrumental rock band BHD and Donkey’s Ears (驢子耳朵).

300,000 Old Pliers (三十萬年老虎鉗) and The Golden Age Syndrome (黃金年代症候群) are scheduled tonight at Underworld (地下社會), a small basement club in Taipei. A rock duo based in Brooklyn and Tokyo, Ken South Rock appear tomorrow with reggae rock group Hang in the Air (盪在空中) also playing. Alternative rockers When I see the Mushroom share the stage with The Sameday (平凡生活) on Wednesday.

Electronic rock duo Phaze (瘋十代) from Singapore land tonight at Roxy Rocker, a basement hangout for indie rockers and fans in Taipei. Also on the bill is Taiwan’s country/alternative rock outfit The Tic Tac. Tomorrow’s lineup includes garage/punk outfit Floaty and pop/psychedelic band Blind Acid Date (迷幻的瞎眼約會).

It is night of electronica spun by DJs Zi-Jing, Al Burro and Puzzle Maker tonight at Indie rock club Revolver. Tomorrow is the After the Scream party featuring Kid Millionaire, Dr Reniculous Lipz and The Skallyunz (白悟空). Funky Brother is back on Wednesday. Thursday goes acoustic with interaction act The Bollands, The Wayfarer State and Nick Brown.

Pipe Live Music, a main venue for indie music and parties, hosts blues rock outfit Commuters (通勤少年), electronic/post punk group Miss Banana (香蕉小姐) and Sodium tonight. Taiwanese musician Chu Yueh-hsin (朱約信), also known as Joy Topper (豬頭皮), and Hsiao Fu-te (蕭福德) take the stage tomorrow.

Female duo Mars & Coara (火星熊) and Infancy (隱分子) perform tonight at Witch House (女巫店), an intimate coffeehouse-style venue in the National Taiwan University area. It is alt-rock band Silent Toads (啾吉惦惦) tomorrow. A-list songstress Cheer Chen (陳綺貞) appears on Wednesday. Thursday’s show features award-winning jazz pianist Alex Pryrodny.

Legacy Taipei, located in a former warehouse at Huashan 1914 Creative Park (華山1914), hosts top Taiwanese pop performers and international acts. Tomorrow’s show features hip-hop outfit Juzzy Orange, electronic/dubstep group Lie Gramophone (謊言留聲機) and hip-hopsters and activists Kou Chou Ching (拷秋勤). It is the release party of pop rockers FUN4’s debut album on Wednesday.

Israeli flutist Hadar Noiberg plays with Chipin & Kaiya’s Jazz Quartet (啟彬與凱雅爵士四重奏) at Riverside Live House (河岸留言西門紅樓展演館) tonight. Jimmy Wang (王俊傑), a folk and ballad singer performs with friends tomorrow. Sunday’s show features indie folk group hush! and Easy. Funk-rock/nu-metal veterans Coach (教練) and God Dance hit the stage on Thursday.

Riverside Cafe (河岸留言) hosts Japan’s blues guitarist Shun Kikuta and friends tonight. It is pop outfit Come on! Bay Bay! (來吧!焙焙) and Crispy tomorrow, followed by Paiwan hip-hop artists Boxing (拳樂團) and Wildflower (野花樂團) on Sunday. Pop rock youngsters Yellow Hyacinth (黃色風信子) and punk/hard-core rockers Hardboiled (水煮蛋) are scheduled on Tuesday, and it is Rosy (玫瑰紅樂團) and Bling High (不厲害) on Wednesday. Thursday’s lineup are Puyuma musician Hao-en (昊恩) and experimental singer-songwriter Wang Yu-jun (王榆鈞).

Ash & Friends bring a night of jazz grooves and tunes of the cool-Jazz genre tonight at Sappho de Base, a late-night lounge bar that hosts mostly jazz shows. Soy La Ley blends jazz with Cuban music tradition tomorrow, while A Nossa Musica brings a blend of traditional Brazilian music and jazz on Tuesday. Wednesday’s act is Baaa! Jazz Quartet, followed by Adriano-Musa Duo on Thursday.

The Wall (這牆) programs regular live rock shows at Kaohsiung’s Pier 2 Arts Center (高雄駁二藝術特區). Indie pop group Queen Suitcase (皇后皮箱) stages a show tomorrow with alternative rock outfit The Old Mog Detective Agency (老貓偵探社) and Easy also playing. It is Shuo & Cool Humor (蕭賀碩與冷笑話樂團) on Sunday.

Event

Taipei Discussion and Learning meets every Sunday at Wisteria Tea House (紫藤廬) to hear lectures and discuss topics such as philosophy, science, anthropology, globalization and alternative medicine. All discussions and lectures are conducted in English. This weekend’s lecture is entitled: The Controversy within the First Teachings of the Buddha”.
