Between the lines

There is something mysterious, even alienating, about the work of Chiu Chien-jen (邱建仁). With titles such as Alone at the Beginning (獨自在原點之上), Silent Moves (暗中進行著) and Nothing Happened So Far (現在,沒有事情發生), his lugubrious and estranged human subjects roam through urban streets or country fields only vaguely apparent through a veil of de-saturated impasto coloring and Pollock-like drips. But don’t think Chiu an imitator, as his style is entirely his own. With There Is No There, There (彼處無他方), currently on view at Lin & Lin Gallery, he achieves something all too rare in today’s artworld: an interest in and thoughtful depiction of the human subject.
