The Scarecrow Contemporary Dance Company’s (稻草人現代舞蹈團) Feet In, Happening (足In‧發生体) is a site-specific performance in which dancers create, perform and complete the work by interacting with the audience and the space where the event takes place.

After receiving an enthusiastic reception at Taipei’s Metropolitan Hall, Chamber Ballet Taipei (台北室內芭蕾舞團) is taking its contemporary version of Giselle by artistic director and choreographer Allen Yu (余能盛) to Tainan. Julie Gardette of the Finnish National Ballet and Michal Stipa from the Czech National Ballet Theatre shine as the tragic lovers, with Alexandre Katsapov as the would-be rival for Gardette’s hand. A Sandwich Husband (當岳母刺字時…媳婦是不贊成的) is the latest comedy by All U People Theatre (全民大劇團). It looks at the centuries-old rivalry between mothers and their daughters-in-law through a comic rendition of the historical story of Yue Fei (岳飛), the Southern Song Dynasty general noted for his loyalty to the emperor. The production stars acclaimed actresses Fang Fang (方芳) and Ann Lang (郎祖筠).

Classical music

Rendezvous Avec Chopin (與蕭邦有約) pays tribute to Chopin in a concert that features Wu Chia-wen (吳佳雯) on piano performing the composer’s Barcarolle, Op. 60 and Piano Sonata No. 3 in B Minor, Op. 58. The program also includes Ferruccio Busoni’s Variations and Variants on Chopin and Federico Mompou’s Variations on a Theme by Chopin.

Around the World on 88 Keys (環遊世界88鍵) is a concert by the Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra (台北愛樂管弦樂團) and jazz pianist Ronnie Kole. The orchestra will be conducted by Paul Lin (林天吉). The program includes arrangements of popular favorites ranging from A-Train to Mozart’s Turkish March.

Legacy Taipei, located in a former warehouse at Huashan 1914 Creative Park (華山1914), hosts top Taiwanese pop performers and international acts. Tonight and tomorrow the venue hosts a lineup of Mando-pop singers, including JJ Lin (林俊傑), as part of the 2011 Street Fashion Festival (2011創意潮流文化節) [see story above]. On Wednesday, a trio of indie bands takes to the stage: Silverbus, The Little and 1976. On Thursday, it’s the venue’s Next Big Thing concert series, featuring Queen Suitcase (皇后皮箱), Goosander (川秋沙) and My Skin Against Your Skin.

Tonight The Wall (這牆), Taipei’s most prominent venue for indie rock artists, hosts an evening of J-pop inspired by cosplay, with all-male otaku group Fudanjuku and the Nakano Fujo Sisters. Tomorrow Inoran, co-founder of popular J-rock band Luna Sea, takes to the stage. On Wednesday it’s Bowztiger (包子虎), Go Go Rise and The Looking Glass. Note: Primal Scream was originally slated to perform in Taipei this past Wednesday, but canceled the concert. Those who purchased advance tickets from The Wall can obtain a refund until Aug. 31 by visiting the venue between 3pm and 11pm.

Tonight Witch House (女巫店), an intimate coffeehouse-style venue in the National Taiwan University area, hosts Hakka singer-songwriter Ayo (謝宣圻) and jazz fusion group Gina’s Can (吉那罐子樂團). Tomorrow Chia’s Jazz Trio takes to the stage.

Underworld (地下社會), a small basement club in Taipei, hosts psychedelic indie rockers Flat Club (假文藝青年俱樂部) and garage rockers Bowztiger (包子虎). Tomorrow Japanese band Mugen Hoso takes to the stage, sharing the bill with Skip Skip Ben Ben, the latest project of the talented songwriter and vocalist Ban Ban (斑斑). On Tuesday, the venue hosts a special show featuring Japanese punk group Takayukidan. Emo-punks Punkhoo (胖虎) are also on the bill. On Wednesday, it’s Miss Banana and Wind Evasion (風迷藏).

Tonight Riverside Cafe (河岸留言) hosts the Cold Ducks (冷鴨子), a band that plays blues and jazz. Session bassist and teacher Tan Ming-hui (譚明輝) presides over a jam session tomorrow, while Mando-pop singers Chen Yi-fan (陳怡帆) and Huang Tsung-hsin (黃宗信) appear on Sunday. The Earl Hines II Jazztet plays cool jazz tonight at Sappho de Base, a late-night lounge bar that hosts live jazz and blues performances. Tomorrow it’s Flaneur Daguerre, which is holding a CD release party [see story on page 13]. On Tuesday, the Fan Hsu Trio (徐梵三重奏) plays Thelonius Monk compositions, and on Wednesday, it’s Electric Mess Age (電子混亂世代), which plays disco and acid jazz. On Thursday, the Nomads Ensemble performs European jazz and folk music.

Italian restaurant Capone’s, hosts Taipei Swing, which holds its weekly social on Fridays. All are welcome to join and a beginner’s lesson is offered. The Wall (這牆) programs regular live rock shows at Kaohsiung’s Pier 2 Arts Center (高雄駁二藝術特區).
