Organized by Dance Works (舞工廠舞團), the fifth edition of Taipei Tap Festival (台北踢踏節) presents two tap-dance shows at Red House Theater tomorrow starring some of the world’s top tap dancers, including Derick K. Grant, Chloe Arnold, Ron XII, Suji and Keitaro. A

A collaboration between Taiwan’s Su Wen-chi (蘇文琪) and Belgian choreographer Arco Renz, Heroine (迷幻英雌) is a solo dance piece performed by Su that dwells on cultural difference as reflected in the performing arts, namely perceptions of time and space in the West and the East.

Musician and singer Summer Lei (雷光夏) meets a young William Shakespeare in Sonnets of Light and City (光與城市的十四行詩). Produced in collaboration with artist Chen Chien-chi (陳建騏) and theater veteran Michael Li (黎煥雄), the work features Lei chanting and singing the Bard’s sonnets.

Asoka (阿育王) by Siou-Ching Taiwanese Opera Troupe (秀琴歌劇團) recounts the life story of Asoka, an ancient Indian emperor and famous convert to Buddhism.

Famed Taiwanese dancer Sheu Fang-yi (許芳宜) and her choreographer partner Bulareyaung Pagarlava (布拉瑞揚) have added an extra show onto their sold-out Taipei Arts Festival run next week, to help raise money for the latter’s Typhoon Morakot-devastated hometown, Jialan Village (嘉蘭) in Taitung County. All proceeds from Sunday night’s show will go to relief efforts.

The Judith Mendenhall Flute Recital (茱蒂•曼德赫長笛獨奏會) features Judith Mendenhall, a professor of music at The City University of New York, performing a program that includes Telemann’s Methodical Sonata in G Minor, and works by Gaubert, Bartok, Poulenc and Doppler.

Mischa Maisky & NTSO (米夏•麥斯基與國臺交) sees the renowned cellist back in Taipei performing together with the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (國立台灣交響樂團) with guest conductor Chien Wen-pin (簡文彬). The program includes Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1 for Eight Cellos, Haydn’s Cello Concerto No.1 in C Major and Elgar’s Sospiri, Adagio for String Orchestra, Harp and Organ, Op. 70.

Nobuko Imai & NTSO (今井信子中提琴獨奏會) brings the highly regarded Japanese violinist to Taipei to perform with the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (國立台灣交響樂團). Imai will play the viola accompanied by Tomizawa Naoko, with Yen Hua-rung (顏華容) on piano. The program includes the viola solo of Telemann’s Excerpts From 12 Fantasies and Vieuxtemps’ Viola Sonata in B-Flat Major Op. 36.

Post-rock band Sugar Plum Ferry (甜梅號) appears tonight at The Wall (這牆). Tomorrow the venue will show an animated film starring members of Material, a band that promotes environmental awareness. Former Sticky Rice frontman Ma Nien-hsien (馬念先) makes a guest appearance. Afterwards it’s the Old School, All Skull party with DJs Soccer Boy, Mykal, Spykee and Dino. On Sunday, Scottish indie folk singer Ally Kerr, on tour in Asia, performs quiet and dreamy acoustic-pop music.

Symmetry Quartet, a jazz outfit consisting of two guitarists, a double bassist and a drummer, plays tonight at Witch House (女巫店). Post-rock group Mosquilephant (蚊子大象) plays tomorrow. On Thursday it’s Supergotan (探戈四重奏), a group with an erhu (二胡) player that plays tango-influenced music.

Tonight Riverside Cafe (河岸留言) hosts a tribute concert to John Scofield in anticipation of the famed jazz guitarist’s appearance in Taipei next week. Performing will be venue owner Geddy Lin (林正如) and his band. [See story on Page 13 of next Friday’s Taipei Times.] Also appearing is American experimental jazz vocalist Jen Shyu. Tonight at Underworld (地下社會) it’s Boyz and Girl (男孩們女孩), indie-folk rocker Ban Ban’s (斑斑) band, and experimental rock band Macbeth (馬克白). [See Highlight.] Tomorrow indie-rocker group Braces (牙套) celebrates its 10th anniversary. On Sunday the venue opens for a special show with Taiwanese reggae and dub band Down in Air (盪在空中), indie favorites 88 Balaz (88顆芭樂籽), punk group Random (隨性) and post-rockers Mosquilephant (蚊子大象).
