Mando-pop crooner Michael Wong (光良) comes with his new album on Sunday, and it is the release party of R&B/funk group Space Cake’s (史貝絲考克) new record on Wednesday. The new latest installment of The Next Big Thing takes place on Thursday, featuring Amis noise folk artists Outlet Drift (漂流出口), folk combo Nowhere Band and noise pop/shoegazing act Floating Boat (浮舟).

Braids, a three-piece experimental pop band from Montreal, arrives tonight at The Wall (這牆), Taipei’s most prominent venue for indie rock artists, accompanied by Physical Chemical Brother (理化兄弟). Tomorrow, the venue hosts U.N.I., a hip-hop event featuring Leo37, SOSS, LC, Ill Mo and Tower Da Funkmasta. On Sunday, Japan’s The fin performs its version of of brit-pop, shoegaze and chillwave. Thursday’s roster include folk rock combo Young David (青春大衛) and post-rock act Constant & Change (康士坦的變化球).

Located down a sideroad in old Wanhua District (萬華區), Waley Art (水谷藝術) has an established reputation for curating some of the more provocative indie art exhibitions in Taipei. And this month is no exception. Peter Brighton was amazed when he found the giant jackfruit. He had been watching it grow on his farm in far north Queensland, and when it came time to pick it from the tree, it was so heavy it needed two people to do the job. “I was surprised when we cut it off and felt how heavy it was,” he says. “I grabbed it and my wife cut it — couldn’t do it by myself, it took two of us.” Weighing in at 45 kilograms, it is the heaviest jackfruit that Brighton has ever grown on his tropical fruit farm, located
