Taipei Discussion and Learning meets at Frog Free Cafe (蛙咖啡) to hear lectures and discuss topics such as philosophy, science, anthropology, globalization and alternative medicine. This week’s event is an open discussion and is titled Labor, Wages, Immigration and the Modern Worker. The discussion is likely to incorporate aspects of what it means to be in the labor market at this time in history. Topics to be discussed include globalization, minimum wage and fair trade. All discussions and lectures are conducted in English.

A few weeks ago I found myself at a Family Mart talking with the morning shift worker there, who has become my coffee guy. Both of us were in a funk over the “unseasonable” warm weather, a state of mind known as “solastalgia” — distress produced by environmental change.
