The hidden and the revealed

By Diane Baker  /  Staff reporter

The Body Expression Dance Theater (BodyEDT, 體相舞蹈劇場) returns to Taipei’s Experimental Theater next week to debut its latest production, In and Out — not to be confused with dancer/choreographer Chen Yun-ju’s (陳韻如) In ∞ out (呼∞吸), which was staged at the theater in June.

In and Out centers on memories and discoveries, the contrast between what is kept inside and what is allowed out, between wanting to see and not wanting to be seen. It is about the constant juggling that each person does in the relay race of life.

The company makes frequent forays abroad and was in Scotland last month, one of three Taiwanese dance troupes taking part in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. For the Beitou-based BodyEDT, which performed Mr. R, it was a return engagement, having performed at the Fringe two years ago.

Company founder Lee Ming-cheng (李名正) is another example of the talented choreographers to emerge from the Taipei National University of the Arts, where he obtained both a bachelors and a master’s degree before going to study in the US at New York University.

Lee founded the company in 2000, a year after he returned from the US. Since 2004, his works have focused on what he calls “contemporary urban consciousness,” often inspired by oriental belief systems or Taiwanese poetry and opera. He has increasingly incorporated digital technology and multi-media effects into his works, as shown by last year’s Mr. R, which featured LED lighting and holographic projections.
