LOHAS Life Ceramics looks at the connection between ceramic art and lifestyle, with work by seven artists who have collaborated with Wu Xing Design Company (五行創藝設計). It runs at the studio’s Tamsui (淡水) workshop until Sept. 23.

Wu Xing Design Company was founded in 2007 by National Taiwan University of Arts (國立台灣藝術大學) instructors and alumni to promote contemporary Taiwanese arts and crafts. The studio aims to make its creations accessible to a wide range of people: in addition to their Tamsui workshop, Wu Xing Design also co-manages a store in Zhongshan MRT Station (中山捷運站) which sells ceramic dishware, home accessories and sterling silver jewelry.

The same philosophy extends to LOHAS Life Ceramics — much of the work featured in the exhibition can be used on a day-to-day basis.

“We have a lot of practical items, like cups, mugs and plates. We want to find ways to turn art into a lifestyle, so as long as it is something we can use, we’ll try to incorporate it into our work,” says exhibit organizer and artist Liu I-wen (劉怡雯).

Wu Xing’s artists also draw inspiration from their daily experiences. American artist Elenor Wilson’s Clouds series of wall sculpture was inspired by the tessellated clover-like patterns in iron window grills seen on many older Taiwanese residences.

“Her work uses Taiwan as its inspiration and examines how it is different from her American experiences and the affect that has had on her,” says Liu. Artwork by Chen Ming (陳銘) is also influenced by a sense of place: the National Taiwan University of Arts instructor examines transformations in the neighborhoods he grew up in. Other artists included in the exhibition are Liu, Kung Wen-yi (鞏文宜), Lai Wei-ling (賴韋伶) and Wu Wei (伍薇).
