[BOOK REVIEW] Chasing thrills with Elvis Cole, private eye

Los Angeles writer Robert Crais’ popular detective returns for a wallop of summer-reading suspense in this frenetically paced thriller

By John Marshall  /  NY TIMES NEWS SERVICE , SEATTLE

Chasing Darkness races to its breakneck conclusion, the escalating tension orchestrated with devilish aplomb by Crais. Two absolute shockers rocket out of left field in the waning pages.

Chasing Darkness is not without its shortcomings. The pace is so frenetic that little time is spent in filling in some telling details of Cole’s life. This may not be a problem for longtime fans of the Cole series, but he comes off as a pretty sketchy action figure to those who may be attracted to the series these days because of Crais’ increasing popularity.

Still, Chasing Darkness remains a gripping summer read from noir territory. Crais definitely delivers that much-desired hot-weather wallop of action, tension and suspense.
