DM: The first time I got handed a mic to do stand-up comedy was an amateur comedy contest in Aspen, Colorado, in 1987. I was 20 ... . I got into the club with a fake ID. … The only thing … on my mind was winning the US$200 grand prize, which I won that night and for the next 13 weeks. … The second thing was, when they read out my name … are they gonna make the connection that the guy who won the contest is not the guy who's on the ID? ... [When] they handed me the money I immediately spread [it] around the bar. ... I ran that same routine every week for 13 weeks.
