Last weekend saw Taipei bump to a trio of successful house bashes with Junior, Megan and Fratzuki joining Yoshi at new night Melt on Friday at M Club (www.mclub-taipei.com.tw) while Cookie held court alongside SL, Nina and David S in a busy Onyx Room at Luxy. On Saturday, Vice returned with Code, Schism and Scotty Baller entertaining a 400-strong crowd at Hips, the former Barrios, which just goes to show there's life in the old party dog yet.
Tomorrow, things take a bit of a different turn as Marcus Aurelius, Junior, Megan and Hooker will take over Taipei Arena. Yes, this is the first party in the city to be held on, er, ice and will feature music, dancing and beer, the latter two not usually associated with ice skating, unless you're Ukrainian former athlete Oksana Bayul whose career slid off track after she moved to the US.
Skates will be for hire, but get there early as pairs are limited. Entry is NT$500 with skate hire, NT$300 if you're one of the 30 or so people in the city who take along their own. But if your ice-skating skills leave you looking like Bambi on poppers, or the idea of sprawling on the ice with a can of Taiwan pijiu while show-off Canadians who were born in mukluks whizz past close enough to slice off your fingers, you can opt to don normal footwear, though high heels are probably a no-no. Bring your own beer, by the way.
For those who prefer terra firma to aqua congelata, a bevy of parties is on offer elsewhere over the weekend. At MoS, it's residents' night tonight with Joe Ho and Blue in the back room while Whiskey hosts hip-hop in the main room, and Lisa Kay jets in from the Great White North tomorrow evening. Luxy presents Oxygen8 tonight, which would be very appealing if "games and prizes" weren't listed as one of the main attractions, and if they weren't hosting a "Secret Games Night" in the next room: What's with all the games?
At Champagne 3 tomorrow Kris O'Neil plays trance while at the same venue on Thursday, Schism continues his weekly residency. For those sick of all-you-can-barf ladies' nights on Wednesday, Play at Paulina located at 167 Anhe Rd Sec 2, Taipei (台北市安和路二段167號), offers killer martinis and decent house with this columnist, Reverend Smith and Owl T at the controls.
