His marriage to pop star Britney Spears is on the rocks, his debut album opened to dismal sales and he's making TV commercials playing himself as a fast-food cook.
Now, as if to dispel any lingering doubt about where his showbiz career is headed, US fast-food restaurant Taco Bell has invited Kevin Federline to work for an hour behind the counter at one of its branches.
The offer from the Mexican-themed chain came in a letter sent to Federline days before the wannabe rapper, also known as K-Fed and Fed-Ex, was due to appear in a Super Bowl television ad yesterday playing a burger restaurant worker dreaming of stardom.
The National Restaurant Association, an industry trade group, last week blasted K-Fed's 30-second TV spot for Nationwide Insurance, saying the ad is an insult to fast-food employees and demanding that the commercial be dumped.
Nationwide has stood by its ad, and the soon-to-be-ex-Mr. Spears has shrugged off the controversy, saying the commercial pokes fun at himself, not the restaurant industry.
Capitalizing on the ruckus, Taco Bell president Greg Creed wrote to Federline, inviting him to come to work at an unspecified outlet "just for a one-hour shift."
"We'll get you a uniform, a custom name tag and show you what a great place Taco Bell is to work," the letter said, quoting Federline as having said last year that his own kids would work someday at Taco Bell.
"It is a genuine offer," Taco Bell spokesman Rob Poetsch said. Asked how much Taco Bell might pay Federline for an hour of his time, Poetsch said, "We really haven't discussed money."
Also foundering is the relationship between Australian pop star Kylie Minogue and her boyfriend, the French singer and actor Olivier Martinez. The couple announced their separation on Friday.
"Olivier Martinez and Kylie Minogue have officially confirmed that they are no longer a couple," the pair said in a joint statement published by Britain's domestic Press Association news agency.
"They have made it clear that the decision to go their separate ways was mutual and amicable.
"The media's false accusations of disloyalty have saddened them both. The two remain very close friends."
Britain's News of the World tabloid claimed last week that the couple's four-year relationship was on the rocks and alleged Martinez, 41, had been unfaithful.
Minogue, 38, was forced to cancel two upcoming concerts on the UK leg of her tour last month due to a respiratory tract infection. The singer, who is back on tour following treatment for breast cancer discovered in mid-2005, also had to pull out halfway through a performance in the northwest English city of Manchester due to the flu.
Hard rock band Van Halen has announced a reunion with original singer David Lee Roth for a major concert tour later this year, according to media reports Saturday.
The band announced on its Web site that the 40 dates on a North American tour would be their first concerts with Roth at the microphone since 1984.
"I am very excited to get back to the core of what made Van Halen," guitarist Eddie Van Halen said in the statement.
It was unclear if the reunion with Roth would extend beyond the concert tour.
Eddie and his brother, drummer Alex Van Halen, will perform on the tour with Roth. Original bassist Michael Anthony has apparently not been asked to participate and will be replaced by Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie's 15-year-old son.
