Festival pays tribute to enduring myth

By Jules Quartly  /  STAFF REPORTER

Yesterday morning, around 7am, members from the Chu clan were sent up the mountain behind the arena in Wufeng to cut down a tree. This represented the tree from which the short people fell to their deaths down a ravine.

Back in the arena there were games, such as jumping to grab a stem of silver grass (芒草) suspended from some poles that had been cut down in the forest. This signified the short people falling into the ravine.

Finally, there was a melee as the young Saisiyat warriors were encouraged to break the poles that were used in the games. This denoted cutting down the tree that the last of the short people fell from.

The short people had been honored and all that remained was for the participants to take one last drink of rice wine and get some well-deserved rest.
