The film "made plaintiffs the object of ridicule, humiliation, mental anguish and emotional and physical distress, loss of reputation, goodwill and standing in the community," the lawsuit said.
Borat topped the US box office with US$26.5 million in sales its first weekend, far more than expected for a low-budget movie that opened in just 837 theaters. The film benefited in part from publicity sparked by Kazakh officials protesting the unflattering portrait of their country as a backward nation of misogynists and racists.
