All hell breaks loose for Taiwan's youth

The ceremonies associated with Ghost Month might not seem to be that attractive to the young, but the National Youth Commission is working hard this year to alter perceptions

Tuesday's festivities also include the Pudu ceremonies at Longshan Temple (龍山寺) in the town of Lugang (鹿港), Changhua County, and at the Dashiye Temple (大士爺廟) in Chiayi County. The temples were constructed in the Ching Dynasty, and are cultural and religious hubs in Taiwan.

Youth Exploration Bus trips are available for both events.

The NYC will pick up the tab for the road trips, but young participants are asked to submit a report on their experiences. Music compositions will be accepted in lieu of reports, said Cheng. Foreign youths are encouraged to apply to participate in the excursions, and English translators will likely be on hand. Application forms are available online at www.youthtravel.tw/2006ghost. Applications can be submitted via e-mail (trust801@ms71.hinet.net) or by fax, (02) 2394-7675, or can be mailed or delivered in person to 4F, 19 Jinhua Street, Taipei (台北市金華街19號4樓). For more information, call (02) 2394-7676 X15.

Meanwhile, the commission has teamed up with Eslite Books' flagship store in Xinyi District, Taipei, to hold exhibitions, lectures, and performances on Ghost Festival themes. A book exhibition will be held throughout the month on the second floor, while a multimedia art exhibition will be held until Wednesday on the first floor. There are weekend performances and lectures on the Ghost Festival today, tomorrow and next Saturday.
