Despite a few gremlins in the equipment and a little spat between performers, last Saturday's party at Green Bay in Wanli Township went off with a bang and heralded the start of the summer season even though the summer solstice is this Wednesday. A good time was had by all: well almost.
The majority of revelers headed home after the tunes finished around 5:30am but a small group stayed behind as the sun broke the morning. Next to the party's entrance a policeman stood over a young Taiwanese lad writhing in the sand oblivious to his surroundings, and by the looks of him he'd ingested something that didn't agree with his mind. The bedraggled soul, who was in such a state he couldn't speak, was minus a shoe, and had no money, cell phone or ID. The policeman, so nonplus it hadn't occurred to him to give the man some water, said an ambulance was on the way. Thirty minutes later two paramedics arrived, who then stood around for 15 minutes considering their course of action. One of the paramedics went to fetch a stretcher only to return 30 minutes later saying it was too much trouble to bring the stretcher onto the beach. The pair proceeded to drag the distressed man along the beach in a manner not unlike a butcher hauling a side of pork out of the abattoir. A source later told the Vinyl Word that the man had been deposited at the local police station.
On a lighter note, Swank Poolside Paradise is tomorrow throwing a party at Da-an Beach Resort (
John Graham, who along with Neil Barry formed Quivver, which has produced some top tunes on the DJ circuit, will be in the mix. After splitting with his partner in music, Graham signed onto Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto label until that went under in 1998. Next came a deal with Virgin, and his first single Everything's Not You.
The DJ/producer went on to form Tilt with Mick Park and Mick Wilson: a notable remix from the trio is their reworking of the 1980s classic Do You Really Want To Hurt Me by Culture Club.
Local DJs Declan, D'Jones, Hooker, Matty D, Kriz, Rios, Stone, Victor Cheng, Jimmy Cheng, Tiger, Blueman, David S, JonB and Phoenix will also man the decks at what promises to be a blazing party. For information on the resort visit see www.daanbeach.com.tw. Tickets for the bash can be bought online or at various outlets; check www.swank-dj.com. There is a shuttle bus from the center of Taichung directly to the party, and from Taipei the quickest route is to take a bus to Dajia then continue by taxi to the resort.
Slightly more low key is the Summer Ceremony 2006 Outdoor Party at Lichi Beach, Hualien with a lineup that contains a few names that haven't come the Vinyl Word's way before. Tickets are a mere NT$100 to listen to Freaky Squeaker, Point, Couger, Mooks and Stanley and watch a fire dancing show.
