Kevin Kern plays the music of light

The Stevie Wonder of classical music has proved especially popularin Asia where the people `have a more reflective, meditative disposition'

By Ron Brownlow  /  STAFF REPORTER

Kern described how he performed the piece in Singapore: "The techs killed all lights and then out comes this big resonant `bong,' which is the opening gesture of a night sky. About 32 measures later as the piece developed we brought up the lights of the stage in the pattern of a starry sky. It allowed the audience to experience my world as I experience it."

Playing the piece was "a blast," he added. "When the lights went out in the concert hall, I was immediately aware of a sense of liberation. I was transported into a space that contained just me and the piano."

"It was like inviting the audience into that darkened living room where I used to create growing up."
