Mortensen, 47, also known for his role in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, will play a business man caught up in an affair of vengeance involving the Russian mafia and a nurse investigating the death of a prostitute, Variety said.
The film, Eastern Promises, is to be produced by Focus Features, an offshoot of Universal that also financed The Secret of Broke Back Mountain.
